This article commences with eye-witness accounts of the battles of Magenta and Solferino, as described by Henry T. Spicer in ‘The Track of War’ and ‘The Last of the War’. The article was later issued as a pamphlet by Richard Barrett “Reprinted from ‘All the Year Round’ by Permission of Mr. Charles Dickens” (1860) and is listed in the 2013 catalogue of Jarndyce the antiquarian bookseller as by ‘Spicer, Henry (?)’; this tentative attribution seems justified.
