and leaving it to the good feeling of the Austrian
government whether any compensation should be made.
He did not blame the present government for taking up
the case as it had been left by their predecessors, and
they had shown more vigour. The act, in his opinion,
had been founded not upon any law, or upon religious
intolerance, but upon political considerations, in resentment
towards the English government and nation for
the part they had taken in the affairs of the continent
a sentiment arising out of a mistaken view of the
interests of Austria herself. The policy of the British
cabinet at that period, he observed, would have contributed
to the peace of Europe and to the happiness of
the people of Italy, while it would not have lowered
Austria in the scale of nations if her possessions had
been limited to the north of the Alps.—After some
observations by Mr. Plowden and Mr. Hume, Sir H.
Verney withdrew the motion.
